Tags to Riches

If like me you have hundreds (thousands) of photographs in folders, in project folders, in import folders, in final folders, event and holiday folders as JPGs as TIFFs, and so on.... makes finding an image a nightmare. There is a new solution to this problem, Tagging. No longer just what kids do with spray cans or mums do with new school uniform. Getting into the habit of Tagging your photographs makes locating them again afterwards a breeze.

How to do it? Well in Windows 7 and Windows Vista it is easy. Open your Pictures Library, go to an image, select it by clicking on it once and in the Status bar at the bottom of the window will be displayed a thumbnail of the image, file type and along with a few other pieces of information, a Tag field. Simply "Add a Tag" or as many as you wish. Separate each with a semi colon (;), windows will actually put this in for you and remember to click the "Save" button when you are finished.

Now you can search using your Tags or you can "Arrange by Tag". Pictures with multiple Tags will show as multiple images, one for each Tag, when viewed like this.

It will take a while to go through and Tag all of your images, but it will save you time in the long run. And going through all your old images, you may find a missing master piece; at the very least it is bound to put a smile on your face.
